Rotterdam-based photographer Ari Versluis and stylist Ellie Uyttenbroek have collaborated intensively since 1994, documenting the dress codes of various social groups, first in their highly multicultural hometown Rotterdam (Netherlands), later internationally. Marked by a keen eye for detail and sly humor, the sober photography series’ inspiration goes back as far as August Sander and the Düsseldorfer Schule.
The duo named their series Exactitudes: a contraction of exact and attitude. The photographs have been said to “provide an almost scientific, anthropological record of people’s attempts to distinguish themselves from others by assuming a group identity.“
The Exactitudes were presented at SomoS’ first Alter Angle exhibition, 2013.
As part of the Berlin Fashion Week, SomoS presented a the new solo photography project by Ari Versluis, Encounters, presented as part of Alter Angle #3. These Encounter series are not concentrated on style as part of a group dynamic as seen in the Exactitudes series, but rather focus on self-expressing individuals as a representation of a new kind of super-diversity.
A second “Kreuzkölln Encounter” installment is produced by Ari Versluis during his April 2017 artist residency at SomoS.
