Nika Fontaine

Götter Glamor

from: 01.01.1970

Berlin-based Canadian artist Nika Fontaine’s prolific artistic production encompasses painting, video, photography, performance and music. It focuses on art itself, the cosmic, death, love, otherness and spirituality.

Fontaine is quoted as “playing with the physical musicality of matter and psychological properties of abstract entities;” aiming “to create artistic psychotropics that lead to transcendence and happiness.”

The artist attended painting classes early on with her grandfather and subsequently was inspired by her great-uncle, Jean-Paul Jérôme, the 1955 co-founder of the Canadian geometric art movement Les Plasticiens.
Fontaine studied painting at Montreal’s Concordia University, and came to study in Berlin with the help of a DAAD Undergraduate bursary, obtaining her Meisterschüler at the Kunsthochschule Berlin Weissensee with professor Werner Liebmann.

Regularly exhibiting in Canada, Fontaine has over the years developed a considerable following there. Berlin presentations include such group shows as Fatal, at Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien and Preview at Kunstraum Richard Sorge. Early 2013, she won the jury award at the „Macht Kunst“ art competition organized by the Deutsche Bank which resulted in the 2014 solos show “Pimp my Ride to Heaven” at the DB KunstHalle Studio in Berlin.

The last few years, Fontaine has painted almost exclusively in glitter in works situated in an unique creative and mental terrain between glam and spirituality; camp and earnestness. Nika Fontaine’s current solo show at SomoS, aptly titled Götter Glamor, December 2014, offers an impressive overview of this part of Fontaine’s oeuvre.
