Betty Böhm

Tropicana 404

from: 01.01.1970

Betty Böhm was born in 1979 in Reutingen and lives and works in Berlin.

For the exhibition, Tropicana 404, on display at SomoS in January and February 2015, Betty presents work from her multidisciplinary series “The Royal Hawaiians”, which she created in 2014, following her experience at the eponymous hotel in Baker, California.

Böhm describes the series as “a setting dream – Arne’s Royal Hawaiian Motel. Situated in Baker, California, at the edge of Death Valley, opened in 1957, The Royal Hawaiian marks the decline of a personal American dream. There it is, between the chique of the 50s and cheap faux wood – at the same time exclusive and shabby, yet officially opened but already half abandoned. A site on the one-way street to ruin, symptomatic for the world-wide financial crisis.”

Working across mediums of photography, video and installation, her pieces have as strong narrative, lyrical quality. They tell a story of absence and subtly amplify the reverberations of memories that are locked within places and objects.

Böhm has recently exhibited during the Solo III, juried exhibition of Berlin Art Week 2014. In 2015, she will prepare a solo show to be exhibited in Leipzig, and her work will also be exhibited in the United States.
