Stefano Castronovo

from: 01.01.1970

Biography

Stefano first became known for his huge street-art murals, and paintings on the “tough and a little nasty surface” (Glenn O’Brien) of leather jackets collected and prized by Warhol and other celebrities. Castronovo currently works in Berlin on figurative paintings on paper and canvas of realistic female nudes and other themes.

To quote Glenn O’ Brien further, “Stefano Castronovo is an Italian artist, a master painter who made a huge impact on downtown New York in the ’80s with controversial paintings and murals, such as a red-eyed Mona Lisa on the World nightclub facade, and another with a burning cross. Castronovo was the great innovator of jacket painting, he himself calls it Mobile Pop Art.”

Recent presentations of Castronovo’s work include group shows such as The Sisley Art Project at the Andy Warhol Museum, and the Area Club exhibition at The Hole, curated by Jeffrey Deitch. Recent commissions include a new collection of pop icon jacket paintings for Patricia Field, and murals for the lobbies of the Maritime and Bowery hotels in New York.

Throughout Stefano’s career he has presented work alongside Vito Acconci, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Mike Bidlo, Jonathan Borofsky, David Bowes, Fred Brathwaite, James Brown, Christo, Francesco Clemente, George Condo, Arch Connelly, Jay Coogan, Ronnie Cutrone, Brett de Palma, Jane
