Accumulation – Goran Tomcic & Nándor Angstenberger

12.03.2016   - 02.04.2016

With the “Accumulation” exhibition of works by Goran Tomcic & Nándor Angstenberger, SomoS presents two artists whose work is joined by their abiding interest in process and materials; by a hyper-detailed, time consuming, committed and obsessive work process; and by their ability to deeply follow the paths of both their personal imaginations and their responses to the spirit of the time. The works exhibited here are expressions of process, labor, and materials that are grounded in our everyday world, but that combine to produce awe-inspiring results.

In the time in which art is often merely substitutionally consumed by a quick glance online, Tomcic & Angstenberger’s works defy one-dimensional documentation, interpretation and consumption, by requiring an engagement from the viewer. The act of personally perceiving the deeply layered phantasmagorical substances of the works is a highly rewarding task, and it is therefore probable that no two viewers witness the same work.

What at first glance looks so light, joyous and effortless in Goran Tomcic’s works, is in fact the result of a painstaking and monotonously repetitive process of appropriating, interpreting and accumulating common objects, used as a metaphor of both mourning and happiness. Glitzy and poignant at the same time, Tomcic’s sculptures, installations, collages and objects elegantly and poetically combine references to self-realization, vulnerability and entropy. The consistent use of such materials as holographic film, sequins and reflective foils, all combine to create works where the psychedelic, transcendental, poetic and glamorous converge; portraying life between joy and dissolution.

In their masterfully controlled expansiveness Nándor Angstenberger’s elaborate sculptures convey worlds evolving from within themselves, ideas grown into accumulating and ever expanding matter. Imaginatively constructed from discarded everyday materials, they give back to art the ability of wondrous astonishment and whimsical narrative explorations, keeping the whole in check by a keen sense of composition.
