Artist-in-Residence Exchange Meetup SomoS – GlogauAIR

Meetup, Artist Talks

from: 30.04.2019

More than 14 artists, curators and creatives came together on Tuesday 30th April 2019 for the ongoing Artist-in-Residence exchange meetups between artist residency spaces GlogauAIR and SomoS.

A regular opportunity for resident artists from SomoS to engage with fellow creatives, curators and artists from neighboring Artist-in-Residence(AIR) initiative GlogauAIR, the latest SomoSxGlogauAIR exchange event saw representation of a myriad of nationalities and socio-cultural experiences. Presenting ideas that brought to the fore wide-ranging concepts representative of this diversity, the open exchange format of this event reinforced the positive dialogues and networks fostered by SomoS and GlogauAIR in collaboration.

Taking place at SomoS on Tuesday April 30th, new arrivals from GlogauAIR’s Spring 2019 AIR program sat down with SomoS resident artists and respective curatorial and support team members, creating a group dynamic with cross-disciplinary influences both conceptual and practical. Engaging with each other in an open, constructive format, the day was also an opportunity for the GlogauAIR residents to tour SomoS, stepping inside artist Marcia Vaitsman’s studio for a rare, first-hand glimpse at work-in-progress.

Enjoying brunch together, the networking and engagement between artists produced many animated conversations, a testament to the strength of shared interests and objectives of both the SomoS and GlogauAIR programs. From issues of migration; the echoes of colonialism; the invisible made visible through photography and installation; the relationship between art and games; to abstractions inspired by Haribo gummy bears – this exchange event was a study in the development of creative concepts from international emerging artists across a variety of mediums.

Artist-in-Residence exchange meetups foster relations between artists in Berlin, allowing them to connect, support and network in an informal way. The format of the gathering can range from lectures, artist talks, work demos, to studio visits, providing a forum for visiting artists to get to know each other personally as well as to learn about each other’s artistic practice and the projects that are taking place across the city.

GlogauAIR and SomoS are located just a short walk from each other on either side of the Maybachufer that divides Kreuzberg and Neukölln. A strong relationship between the two spaces has been maintained for approximately the last 3 years.
