Berry Kim

Multi-media Artist from South Korea

01.01.2019   - 31.03.2019

Berry Kim is a painter from South Korea, who, through colorful mixed-media drawings, illustrations, paintings, sculptures, and wearable art, celebrates individuality and expression of character in her hypothetical “Berryland.” Her work explores the lived experience of a hyper image/status-focused society, such as that of her home country.

In her work, Kim critiques the South Korean luxury lifestyle by mirroring the fetishized consumer culture. In her Fake Life series, she presents a visually stylized reflection of a reality in which “people make real physical changes and also use software to virtually change their appearance.” Physical changes being plastic surgery and the wearing of authentic or imitation luxury brands; to the extent that people acquire loans, entering into debt, to alter their appearance. Virtual changes consisting of software usage, i.e. Photoshop and apps, to modify their “electronic appearance.”

Kim views the limited range in lifestyles, consisting of fashion, makeup, occupation etc., as constricting. She states,

Living in Korea with a unique style can lead to being judged as anti-social and ‘wrong’… People don’t recognize their real value. I strongly believe the world can be more colorful with those who have individuality and character.
