Goran Tomcic

Accumulation, Positions Berlin Art Fair

27.09.2018   - 30.09.2018

Goran Tomcic is an artist based in Berlin. He is known for his signature medium of self-adhesive holographic films, and stickers, as well as pompoms, Mylar sequins and other similar materials.
Tomcic transforms these soft and shiny materials into messages of startling grace and power. When assembled into his visually challenging collages, assemblages, mobiles, or installations, they are dizzying and gorgeous. His collages made of holographic films, similarly to a Mirror Ball effect, endlessly reflect and refract against itself, the exhibition space, the lights and the viewer, gaining depth when seen from different angles.
These artworks slyly exert an external control of our internal sensory perception; through their ever-changing and euphoric nature. Tomcic’s work elicits a strange array of reactions, ranging from confusion and fear, to serenity and calm. With these innovative effects, he manages to always reinterpret the medium of collage.

An artist, writer, and curator of contemporary art, Tomcic was born in former Yugoslavia. He has lived and worked in the US, and currently resides in Berlin. He studied Art History and Comparative Literature at the University of Zagreb, and holds an MA in Curatorial Studies from Bard College (1996) where he graduated with a theses on the work of Marjetica Potrc. Tomcic has worked as a Director of Galleries at Miami-Dade College, and as Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at Oberlin College, Ohio, among other positions that he held. His book of poetry, “Fragile” has been published in Zagreb in 1991. Since 2000, Tomcic has been working as an independent visual artist and writer.
