Introducing New SomoS Artist-in-Residence Syed Shoaib Mahmood

01.04.2017   - 31.07.2017

SomoS welcomes visual artist Syed Shoaib Mahmood who came to Berlin from India for a four month Artist Residency. He works in mixed media and sculpture.
The focus of Mahmood’s current work lies on multimedia installation, pieces that incorporate language, the word and philosophy. They serve as visual metaphors for relationships between people. He is interested in the philosophical aspects of beauty; its effects, paradoxes and ironies, because as, how Mahmood sees it, beauty has the ability to change and interrupt our lives and cause us to reflect, -it is ultimately provocative. Realizing that “if you stare at anything beautiful long enough it becomes ugly,” his aim is to examine its meaning beyond the surface and artifice. To him, the resistance that a piece creates is what makes it beautiful.
