Merijn Hos is a visual artist, commercial illustrator and occasional art director based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. He graduated in 2004 with a BFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts, Utrecht.
Merijn Hos manages to combine commercial commissions for big media clients with joyful and quirky independent illustrative work, that distinguishes itself by an optimistic character and bold, colorful features. Next to his work as illustrator, he is also an independent publisher and creates artistic projects, workshops and exhibitions. An interesting aspect of Merijn Hos’ work is his vision of Neocraft: folklore art with its use of specific sets of color and bold shapes, inspire his wooden sculpture, installation art, and drawings.
Merijn Hos has exhibited in solo shows at Kunsthal Stavanger, Norway; Kelderman en van Noort, Eindhoven; Nina Sagt Gallery, Dusseldorf; Krets, Malmö; and took part in group shows at Design Museo, Helsinki; Stedelijk Museum Kampen; Chapter One Gallery, London; Gemeentemuseum, Den Haag; Iguapop Gallery, Barcelona; Knitting Factory, New York.
His artwork has been published in print by Gestalten Verlag, Berlin; Thames & Hudson, London; Grinko Press, New York; Publikat; Drago Arts & Communication, Rome; AllRightsReserved, Melbourne.
Since 2006 Hos is also often invited to several talks, panels or presentations in which he is spreading his knowledge as lecturer and professional.
In the frame of the 2016 Berlin Pictoplasma Festival Character Walk, he presented his “I’m Ghost” Installation (2011-2016) at SomoS in a Pictoplasma duo show together with French artist Guillaume Kashima.
