Born in Moscow in 1988, Mischa Tangian has worked widely as a performer, violinist, pianist, composer and conductor. He has organized concerts and arts events in Düsseldorf (Festival Nacht der Neuen Musik, Quadriennale Düsseldorf), London (DAAD alumni exhibition 2013) and Maastricht (Klanken Festival).
Tangian studied composition with Manfred Trojahn at the Robert Schumann Conservatory in Düsseldorf, Germany, where he graduated with distinction. He has been given a grant by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) to pursue a MMus in composition with George Benjamin at King’s College London. In addition, he attended master classes with Wolfgang Rihm, Marco Stroppa, Toshio Hosokawa, Nigel Osborne Jan Müller-Wieland.
His compositions have been performed in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Great Britain and the Philippines and he has received various private commissions (for example for the songs ‘Ich gehe langsam aus der Welt haraus’ or ‘i carry your heart’). The Rotary/Lions Club Korschenbroich commissioned him a string orchestra piece, Zum Tod einer Tänzerin. He held scholarships by the Dörken Foundation and E.On and won several prizes. He won a 1st prize and a 2nd prize for piano compositions at Jugend Komponiert NRW in 2005. In 2012 he has been awarded a first prize at the International Summer Academy PragueViennaBudapest 2012 for his string quartet piece Atmos and 2013 he has been a finalist of the Berlin Opera Prize.
As a conductor he directed music ensembles in Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. He has conducted the Lontano Ensemble as a guest conductor in a London concert featuring works by Silvina Milstein in 2012. The same year he founded the group area21 to promote works of young composers at King’s and in the area of London. In 2013 he made his debut with a symphony orchestra at the Tonhalle Düsseldorf conducting the premiere of his work Variatio for violin and chamber orchestra in front of an audience of 1.500 people.
Tangian has collaborated with dancers and artists from different fields including dancers Morena Nascimento (Pina Bausch Company), Air.dit, painters Römer+Römer and sculptor Björn Dahlem.
His compositions have been performed throughout Europe including Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and outside of Europe including Great Britain and the Philippines.
Mischa Tangian has a wide range of experience in performing in musical groups and has been a member of several orchestras such as the German National Youth orchestra, for example. Besides writing classical and contemporary compositions, Mischa Tangian has written and arranged folk and jazz music for diverse ensembles.
2014 Mischa Tangian performed a moving musical tour through SomoS’ Unclean exhibition, introducing the audience to previously unseen and unheard aspects of the show through novel composition and inspired improvisations.
